NetEase Cloud Music have doubled the number of independent artists on their platform in one year
A recent report from the Chinese streaming service claims they now have 200,000 independent Chinese artists, up from 100,000 in 2019.
In 2019, NetEase Cloud Music generated over 273bn streams of songs from independent musicians, with around 86% of them under 30 years old.
Compared with 2017, more than 40% of independent musicians in China saw an obvious revenue growth in 2020. The total revenue of musicians participating in our Project Cloud Ladder, an initiative to encourage independent musicians to create better music, exceeded over RMB 100 million ($15.1m) in the first 10 months of 2020.

NetEase Cloud Music is in competition with Tecent Music in China. Tencent have a similar project Tencent Musician Program, announcing earlier this year they’d paid out $84m and pulled in over 400bn for indie artists since its launch.
