The top 50 artists on SoundCloud are all rappers
SoundCloud is open for everyone to make a success on, but rap music is currently dominating SoundCloud in a big way.
2017 has been the year of the SoundCloud rapper seeing a wave of new rap artists come up on the open platform. In fact SoundCloud has gotten so good for up-and-coming rap that their entire Top 50 is currently made up of rappers.
It used to be that DJ’s and producers were the top export for SoundCloud where many made their come up. In recent years with the rise of rappers like Post Malone, XXXTentacion, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos and many others it seems SoundCloud is being reclaimed for rap.
The top 50 chart is for the US but shows a massive trend on SoundCloud which prides itself on allowing anyone to get their music out to listeners. Even elsewhere in countries like Germany, Canada, and the UK the Top 50 sees itself heavily dominated by rap music.
Although it’s easy to assume that this is representative of SoundCloud’s audience, looking at other streaming platforms like Spotify it’s clear to see that hip-hop and rap is becoming one of the biggest forces in music. It could even be that the explosion of rap and hip-hop is the main driver of the streaming boom we’re seeing.
