Polo G, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and SoFaygo have topped The SoundCloud Playback 2021, a yearly roundup revealing the biggest SoundCloud artists.

SoundCloud’s 2021 summary was unfortunately slightly eclipsed by Spotify Wrapped happening on the same day. But SoundCloud wasn’t looking to compete with Spotify.

In the Playback announcement post, it even acknowledged the unspoken rivalry: “Powered by fans and communities driving what’s next in music culture, The SoundCloud Playback is rooted in music discovery from emerging and established creators, making it the antithesis of expected mainstream round-ups.”

Note the emphasis on “fans and communities” and “emerging creators”. Spotify Wrapped may celebrate user’s unique listening habits, but look at anyone’s SoundCloud Plackback for 2021 and you’ll find a much bigger focus on grassroots independent artists.

Unlike Spotify, SoundCloud had an awards show to announce its top-played artists – sort of. The laid-back video was hosted by Zack Fox, without performances or any appearances from the winners.

The round-up of what was popular on SoundCloud this year focused on fan engagement within the world of the platform. With its comments and reposts, SoundCloud is a far more social place than Spotify; Spotify relies more on social media sharing as well as in-app playlisting to generate interactions between users.

For every announcement SoundCloud highlighted, the emphasis was on the fans. The top artist on SoundCloud was YoungBoy Never Broke Again, who had the most fan engagement on a release in 2021; the track with the most comments in the first week of release was Taeyong’s “먹구름 (Dark Clouds)” .

Polo G scooped three awards, winning Hit of the Year, Longest Run and Hardest Hit for his song “Rapstar.”

If you’re a SoundCloud Go or Go+ user you can also see which artists you helped support via SoundCloud’s new fan-powered royalties, which should give you a fuzzy feeling knowing your money goes to the artists you listen to the most. SoundCloud also announced the artist who benefited most from the new scheme – Sweely.
