Listening to Spotify on shuffle just got smarter as playlist Enhance is replaced with Smart Shuffle. What’s changed?
What is Spotify Enhance replacement Smart Shuffle? Announced at Spotify’s 2023 Stream On event, Smart Shuffle is a new way to find songs Spotify thinks you might like to listen to, that sit perfectly inside your existing playlists.
Smart Shuffle is available now for Spotify Premium iOS and Android mobile users around the world, who can now choose between standard shuffle and Smart Shuffle when listening to their user-created playlists.
The suggested songs aren’t added to the playlist permanently, or shown in the list – users have the option to save the recommendations into the playlist themselves, or hit the minus icon in Now Playing to avoid the track being recommended to them again.
Spotify playlists of over 15 tracks will have one song suggested per three songs. And it’s an option for the Liked Songs playlist, too.
Smart Shuffle is a more streamlined version of Enhance, Spotify’s previous playlist recommendation function. The feature was first spotted as a test back in May last year.
How to turn on Smart Shuffle on Spotify
- Choose one of your playlists.
- Tap the Shuffle icon at the top of the mix. The first time you do this, you’ll get a choice of shuffle or Smart Shuffle – choose the latter.
- A message will read “Smart Shuffle recommendations now added to Queue,” which you can see by tapping the three lines icon at the bottom right of the Now Playing screen. Recommended tracks are indicated by a sparkle icon by the artist name.
- Tapping the shuffle icon toggles between standard shuffle, which randomises your song choices, and Smart Shuffle which adds recommendations.

provides a helpful guide on how to use the smart shuffle feature to create dynamic and engaging Spotify playlists. The author explains the benefits of using this feature and provides practical tips on how to implement it effectively
Automatically add recommendations to your queue. A playlist with more than 15 songs recommends one track for every three tracks.
Spotify enhanced was in my opinion better because you can play it without shuffle.
I have been working on an alternative way to order Spotify Playlists:
https://www.sortbytune.com/
It does something similar to Smart Shuffle, but gives more control and flexibility to people that want to be more interactive with their music collections.
Smart shuffle can be annoying sometimes, for it can only be turned off by a Premium account. So I use DumpMedia to back up my songs in case I want to listen to them in the order I want.
