Spotify reveal new details of their discovery feature, which provides users with new, personalized song snippets and Canvas videos.

Last November we saw initial test of Spotify’s new Discover feature. The new tab on the navigation bar of the mobile app showed a vertical feed of Canvas videos, while playing snippets of new songs, personalized to the user. Finally, we’ve now got some solid details around the roll out from Spotify themselves.

The new feature expands on Spotify’s second-to-none music discovery tools. Features like Blend – which mixes your music tastes with a friends or artists to create a personalized playlist, Enhance – which adds new recommended songs to an existing playlist, as well as playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar are all designed to help you find new songs you’ll love.

Features around the new discovery feature haven’t changed since the last time we saw it. Users are presented with a full-screen view of Canvas loops. Simply swipe up or down to discover personalized new tracks. Tap the buttons along the right to like the song, add it to a playlist, follow the artist, or share the music and Canvas video to social channels, like Instagram Stories. Everyday, the feed will be updated with 15 fresh recommendations.

The roll out started last week in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The success here will determine a potential wider roll out in the coming months.

As short-form videos continue to grow online, it’s no surprise to see Spotify following in the foot steps of social platforms like Instagram to copy TikTok’s features. Spotify testing new features in a familiar interface could be the push they need to help them keep up with competing ‘social music’ platforms.
