Collectively The World Watched Over 100B Hours Of Gaming Clips On YouTube
With the world facing a lot of issues through 2020 a lot of us turned to the warm embrace of digital media, from music streaming through to video games, and everything in-between. In fact a lot of us found ourselves leaping towards YouTube’s Gaming creators, whom had their biggest year ever on YouTube in 2020.
YouTube now boasts over 40 million active gaming channels and, globally, there were over 100 billion hours of gaming content watch on the site. YouTube live streams also grow exponentially during 2020 with over 10 billion hours watched. Creators such as LazarBeam, Lyna, MortaL, CouRage, TheDonato and Typical Gamer, who are exclusive to YouTube, streamed relentlessly. This even saw Valkyrae (another YouTube exclusive streamer) grow to become one of the biggest female live streamers across all platforms. It was also the year for breakout creators with 80,000 gaming creators reaching 100,00 subscribers and over 1,000 creators hit 5 million subscribers.
There were also many memorable moments throughout live events and premieres in 2020. Of course we had the massive PS5 announcement, Xbox Games Showcase and Fortnite and Travis Scott Present: Astronomical. In addition to this there was also the various Esports events such as Call Of Duty League 2020 Championship, League Of Legends Worlds Finals 2020, and the Overwatch League 2020 Season.
The YouTube gaming community really pulled together during the pandemic with creators such as Rooster Teeth, TheDonato and CoryxKenshin used their voices and channels to benefit Covid-19 relief efforts, Jacksepticeye also raised $660,000 in 12 hours. YouTube themselves also hosted five gaming charity tournaments in Mexico, the United States and Europe to benefit Covid-19 relief efforts.This includes the Call of Duty Warzone Tournament in May, which had a $100,000 donation on behalf of the winning team for the Call of Duty Endowment.
2020 may have been the year of social distancing but online it is safe to say we all came together online. It has been an important and great year for content creators, especially those that are in the gaming sphere.
