Music publishing revenues for independent artists and labels are seeing fantastic growth with billions of dollars in earnings.

Independent music is growing the world over with streaming services levelling the playing field between major label artists and indies. Spotify revealed earlier in the year that over a quarter of their streams are made on independent artists and indie labels’ music.

The burgeoning world of independent music publishing is also seeing powerful growth. The IMPF, a global trade body for independent music publishers, have published their latest report on where independent music publishing is around the world.

The IMPF report that the independent music publishing sector grew by 16.8% in 2022. By the end of that year, indie music publishing had grown in value to a whopping €2.43 billion (roughly $2.6 billion US dollars). This is a doubling of revenues in just five years from €1.25 billion in 2017.

The global music publishing business is estimated to be worth around $15.5 billion for 2022, gaining an impressive $2 billion year-on-year. The independent music publishing sector accounts for 26.7% of the total. The IMPF estimate that the publishing sector will have grown by at least 8-12% in 2023.
