Music is best when it’s shared and a Blend Spotify playlist is the perfect way for you and someone close to share in your own unique tastes together.

What’s a Blend on Spotify? Spotify has a brand new playlist for you and friends to share in your music tastes and really test your friendship.

We all love sharing our favourite records with friends and family. The joy of discovering a new fire track has to be shared and so you end up linking it to everyone on Messenger waiting for them to hit back with their thoughts.

Blend is available for Free and Premium Spotify users, allowing Spotify users to combine their musical tastes (as understood by Spotify) in one juicy playlist. Spotify combines their taste profiles – made from their listening history, their saved music, and more – into one shared playlist that each user can tune in to.

Spotify has extended Blend to up to ten users, so you can get an insight into the eclectic tastes of more of your friends. It also offers an a chance to discover some great new music. So how do you create a Blend on Spotify? Read our guide below.

How to Blend Spotify playlists

  1. Tap Create Blend in the Made for You hub on mobile.
  2. Next, tap Invite to select a friend to join your Blend via messaging.
  3. Once your friend accepts, Spotify will generate custom cover art and a track list for the two of you filled with songs that combine your listening preferences and tastes.
  4. Share your Blend results across your social channels by tapping Share this story at the bottom of your data story screen.

Test your music taste with friends

Go head to head with your other friends and see how well your musical tastes match up with taste match scores. Each Blend playlist will offer up a score showing how well you and your friend’s music tastes line up and then you can compare that with your other Blend playlists with others.

Share your musical friendship

Everyone who has a Blend playlist can easily share their mix on social media and show others how well (or badly) their music matches work. It’s a unique, bonding moment but that doesn’t mean you can’t share that with others and even entice others to get involved and check their scores with you.

The team behind Spotify Blend

The staff behind the Blend playlist are uniquely proud of what they’ve come up with and as such had a lot to share about it. Product Manager, Arjun Narayen said: “I think the thing that makes Blend such a unique product is the way it helps people find common ground with one another.”

He continued: “Each time I make a Blend with someone there’s this awesome moment when we discover which artists and songs we both like and get to bond over how we discovered that artist or when we saw them in concert.”

Senior Engineer, Jen Lamere spoke on what makes Blend different to other playlists that bring users together, saying: “Blend is so different from most of the other Spotify offerings because it automatically combines the tastes of two different users into a playlist. It’s a great way to connect with your friends and learn more about them, and also makes long drives with friends way more enjoyable.”

Rosie Maharjan, an Associate Designer, had just joined the team as Blend was being tested. She said: “My role was iterating on the product to craft the best and most holistic listening experience for users based on user testing and research insights. Being a designer in the Personalization mission is a lot of fun because you get to design beyond the look and feel and focus more on how the user will experience the playlist and its content programming.”

She continued: “The fun thing about music is that it can take you to a time and place, and you can relive those shared moments and experiences with someone else through a song. Blend is a simple way to show someone you’re thinking about them. It’s small but so thoughtful and offers an avenue to get to know new friends or catch up with old ones. I think it’s especially cool for long-distance friendships because the playlist can effortlessly connect to you together, but also help you stay up-to-date since it’s automatically updating and you can see what they’re currently listening to.”

Speaking finally, Senior Engineer Mike Mazzola said: “Blend is like this mystery box of music. When you send it to your friend you never know what you’re going to get, and that’s part of the fun. While most of Spotify is personalized just for you, this is really something meant to bring two people together and let you discover new music through your friends.”
