Spotify smart speakers could be on the way as they test voice search
Spotify are going to start doing what you say as they test voice searches and look towards the potential of making their own smart speakers.
Spotify have added voice search for certain users so that listeners can search by telling Spotify “Play my playlist name“, “Play Drake”, “Show me my Discover Weekly”, and so on. A spokesperson for Spotify told TechCrunch that it is “just a test for now” but they will be sharing more details later.
The voice search seems pretty solid and also gives users the option to request Spotify play a certain genre so that they can easily discover new music. Whilst it will be a pretty handy feature, particularly for Spotify listeners who are driving, it seems likely that they could be testing out features for their very own smart speaker.
After Amazon started the smart speaker craze with Echo, numerous other companies have jumped on the bandwagon including Google and Apple. Last month after Apple released their HomePod speakers rumours new job adverts at Spotify came out looking for people to get involved in the development of hardware products. This follows a job ad the year before where Spotify were looking for someone to help build “frictionless and creative Spotify experiences via fully-connected hardware devices … akin to Amazon Echo”.
Whilst Spotify are already integrated into most smart speakers on the market, Apple notably omitted support for Spotify on their HomePod speakers. Apple actually only provided support for one music streaming service on HomePod speakers which is, unsurprisingly, Apple Music.
