A new report claims Spotify is the most-popular subscription service in India, claiming 26% of paid streams in the past 12 months.

Earlier this month, without providing exact figures, Spotify announced it had tripled its subscription count in two years. A new report from Redseer Strategy Consultants, reported on by Indian television channel CNBC TV18, claims Spotify were responsible for 26% of paid streams in the financial year ending March 31, 2023. This places them above Western stores like Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music, as well as local services like Gaana, Jio Saavn and Wynk.

According to the report, Spotify have achieved this success by placing a heavy focus on local languages and music. Vernacular streams, music localised to a region, saw rapid growth in the financial year, accounting for 34% of all music streams. Punjabi topped the vernacular music, accounting for 39% of these streams. The South Indian market also saw strong growth in user base and engagement in the 12 months.
