Netflix are introducing support for the 3D, immersive, surround experience on iOS, as the latest HomePods beta also includes support.
What use is spatial audio on iOS if the biggest video streaming service doesn’t support it? Netflix have started rolling out spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on iPhones and iPads running iOS 14 or iOS 15. Once you receive the update, simply hook up a pair of AirPods Pro or AirPods Max to experience the 3D effect. Spatial audio uses directional filters to give the impression of multiple audio sources based on where sound is coming from on screen.
As promised by Apple earlier this year, the latest beta for HomePod includes support for spatial audio. When the update drops for the public in the fall, users will be able to switch on lossless and Dolby Atmos on HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers.
Finally Apple are also bringing the ability to pair a second HomePod mini to the Apple TV. This will help spatial audio content feel much more immersive.
