Olivia Rodrigo has knocked Taylor Swift off her pedestal to take the top spot for the most streamed album by a female artist on Spotify.
Olivia Rodrigo officially holds the title for the most streamed Spotify album by a female artist. Rodrigo’s 2021 album ‘Sour‘ has been streamed an astonishing 12.32 billion times and counting.
With an average of 1.12 billion plays per song, Rodrigo’s record takes the top spot from Spotify queen Taylor Swift. Her song ‘Drivers License’ has earned an astonishing 2.16 billion streams alone. In the three years since the album has released, Sour is still gaining listeners and streams every day.
The claim comes from Rodrigo herself, who announced at a performance in London: “I found out the other day, which is pretty cool, that it is the most streamed album by a female artist on Spotify.” She goes on to thank her fans, saying: “That is literally all because of you. I cannot thank you guys enough.”
Talking about ‘Sour’, Rodrigo writes: “That album is just very near and dear to my hear. I made it in my bedroom and my producer’s garage, and I had no expectation of anyone other than my mom and my closest friends listening to it. But as it turns out, lots of people related to the feelings that I was talking about on that album.”
Whilst Rodrigo has taken the top spot for a single album’s streams by a female artist, Taylor Swift remains the platform’s top artists. The last time we counted, Swift had amassed a whopping 77 billion streams across her songs.
Whilst Olivia Rodrigo is killing it, she has a total of just over 17 billion streams on Spotify – according to Kworb. So, with the huge success of ‘Sour’ and the nearly 3 billion streams on her latest album ‘Guts‘, it puts into perspective just how much of a star Swift is.
