Rumours that TikTok will be leaving Canada have concerned creators amid the news that TikTok are closing their Canadian offices.

TikTok hasn’t had an easy time of on the American continent it in recent years. In 2020, Trump signed executive orders to ban the app from the U.S. and whilst it has remained, it has faced threats ever since.

Now, the Canadian government have ordered that TikTok stops operating in Canada. Minister of innovation, science, and industry, François-Philippe Champagne said they had made the decision due to “specific national security risks”. What does this really mean for creators and users of the app?

The good news is that Canada will still have access to the app, allowing both creators and consumers to use the app as usual. The loss for TikTok is the closure of their corporate offices in Toronto and Vancouver.

L.A.-based and Toronto-raised creator reacted to the news saying: “I was honestly shocked and disappointed. I’ve been to the TikTok office in Toronto a few times. They host creators there all the time. It’s not just this online platform that’s in the abyss, it’s real people who care about your career.”

TikTok has been developing their app in 2024 as a better place for musicians. With last year’s launch of Artist Accounts, musicians can guarantee stronger connections from the interactions that their songs produce on videos.

TikTok have continued to enhance artist features, with Fan Spotlight launching earlier this year. The feature allows artists to strengthen bonds with their fans by highlighting the best videos that use their songs. More recently, a pre-save test button was seen on TikTok for upcoming releases.
