TikTok’s upcoming new feature takes a drastic new direction for content with a photo-sharing app to rival Instagram.

TikTok are planning a new photo app called TikTok Notes. In a move that directly competes with Instagram, TikTok’s app gives users a platform to share images and photos with the public. Users will be able to add a caption to their images.

TikTok say that TikTok Notes is “coming soon!” however they don’t specify an exact date. They told TechCrunch: “[We’re] exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats.”

TikTok Notes promises to upload existing photo posts from TikTok and will integrate future photo posts from TikTok too. Users are able to turn off automatic sharing to TikTok Notes in their accounts on TikTok.

Instagram and TikTok’s competition has grown in recent years after the Meta-owned Instagram launched Instagram Reels. The vertical, short-form videos of Reels directly competed with TikTok’s bread and butter and the two have competed along with YouTube Shorts for years over the attention of consumers who want their short video fix.

Whilst a website is live for TikTok Notes with a link to open the app, it doesn’t seem to take users anywhere yet. However, this suggests that a launch is imminent.
