Spotify teams up with NIVA to support grassroots venues in the US
Spotify’s new partnership with NIVA brings grassroots venues into greater focus across the streaming platform, helping artists get discovered where it matters most.
Performing live has always been crucial for artists. It’s where artists can connect with audiences in real-time, build their fanbase, improve their craft, and generate income. Not to mention, it often helps serve as a launchpad for emerging artists.
Independent venues sit right at the heart of that journey. They’re the places that give artists their first real shot. But in recent years, these spaces have been under serious pressure. From rising costs to ongoing licensing challenges, there’s a strong strain on the very ecosystem that helps new talent grow.
Well now, Spotify is launching an initiative to keep local venues thriving in the US.
Spotify’s partnership with NIVA
Spotify has announced a year-long partnership with the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), aimed at supporting independent venues across the US.
The goal is simple. Spotify wants to use its platform to shine a bigger spotlight on the venues and communities that fuel the early stages of an artist’s career.
“Independent venues are the heartbeat of live music. They’re where artists take risks, build devoted communities, and where fans discover what they’ll love for the rest of their lives. This partnership with NIVA is about making sure Spotify’s platform, editorial, and product capabilities are working in direct service of that ecosystem. We’re here for the long game.”

What does the partnership involve?
Working with NIVA, Spotify is rolling out some tangible updates that could make a real difference for both artists and venues.
Stronger live event discovery
Spotify is making it easier for fans to discover independent gigs on the platform, with boosted visibility across venue pages and the Live Events Feed. That means smaller shows have a better chance of cutting through the noise.
Playlist spotlights from venue bookers
A new “Independent Booker Spotlight” playlist series will highlight tracks chosen by the people behind venue line ups, launching this summer. With fresh playlists every month, the aim is to let the people who keep lineups fresh at independent stages put a spotlight on emerging artists that deserve to be discovered.
‘Certified Live Independent’ venue visibility
NIVA’s ‘Certified Live Independent’ seal will now be visible across Spotify’s venue pages. It’s a subtle addition, but one that helps fans identify and support genuinely independent venues.
The bigger picture: Spotify’s ongoing investment in live music
This partnership hasn’t come out of nowhere. Spotify has worked with NIVA before, including a $500,000 contribution to the #SaveOurStages fund to support venues during the COVID pandemic. More recently, Spotify introduced features that allow users to follow venues directly on Spotify, increasing the visibility of local gigs on its platform.
Why this matters for artists
For emerging artists, this kind of visibility can go a long way. Getting booked at a local venue has always been something to celebrate. But now, those shows are more likely to be surfaced directly to fans on Spotify.
That matters. As Spotify doubles down on integrating live event visibility into the streaming experience, the easier it is for artists to turn listeners into real-life audiences.
Get your music ready for moments like this
As platforms like Spotify continue to bridge the gap between streaming and live music discovery, making sure your music is widely available is key.
