Spotify sign major deal to stream thousands of DJ mixes legally with Dubset
Two months after signing a landmark deal with Apple Music, Dubset have partnered with Spotify to release their giant catalog of mixes and remixes on the streaming service.
Dubset are a DJ based music marketplace with a difference. Their unique MixBank technology can analyse any use of samples or other tracks, even if they’ve been altered, meaning they can allocate royalties to the original creators.
This is massive because copyright issues have prevented many artists from being able to release their tracks, especially producers starting out who don’t have the resources to receive the correct licenses. As the biggest music streamer in the world, having Dubset’s catalog added will open up these DJs to an audience of over 100 million music streamers.
Dubset CEO Stephen White said: “This is a major milestone for DJs and music fans all over the world. Our technology platform makes it possible for us to identify and pay rights holders in DJ mixes, making this enormously popular music genre available on the world’s most popular streaming service for the very first time. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the team at Spotify to deliver this content to music fans all over the world.”
Spotify’s chief strategy officer and chief content officer, Stefan Blom said: “Our number one job at Spotify is to deliver great music to fans whenever and wherever they want to listen to it. This deal with Dubset enables us to serve fans of dance music with the mixes they crave while ensuring that artists, labels and publishers get paid fairly. It’s a great day for music fans all over the world.”
The announcement was made yesterday at the International Music Summit in Ibiza. Spotify hope to begin streaming this mixes sometime later this year.
Spotify’s head of original content licensing at Spotify, Pat Shah added: “DJs have long been recognised as the greatest curators of music in the world. We look forward to working with Dubset and the biggest and best DJs in the world to continue to lead the industry by providing our consumers with the best content available in the market.”
