Spotify’s new Featured Curators pilot will highlight playlists other than their own editorial playlists in the app and on the homepage.

All of the top ten most-followed playlists on Spotify are created and updated by Spotify themselves. While there are thousands of Spotify editorial playlists across genres and moods, with over 4 billion user-created playlists as of last year, there will always be a wider variety from users. Whether it’s personal playlists of your favourite tunes or labels curating playlists to highlight their artists, we’re starting to see some user’s playlists boom on Spotify. However despite this growth, discovering user-generated playlists on Spotify is limited.

Currently, the majority of playlists pushed through Spotify are their own editorial playlists or those created in partnership with major brands. To find third-party playlists users must either search for the playlist or be linked directly to the playlist. There is currently no way to browse popular non-Spotify playlists.

This may now change with Spotify’s Featured Curators pilot. Starting out as a limited-time test, select users and influencers’ playlists will show in-app and on the Spotify homepage to users in select markets. Spotify are reaching out to music lovers with established followings and popular playlists, or users telling unique stories through playlists on the platform.

It will be interesting to see how the update gives playlists, beside their own, a push to new users.

Spotify recently improved their Blend feature, which automatically generates a playlist based on the tastes of up to ten user or another artist.
