Would anyone pay $20 a month for Spotify with HiFi? A Spotify Platinum tier offering lossless audio streaming is apparently about to become available.

Spotify HiFi could be about to launch as new subscription tier Spotify Platinum, finally providing lossless music streaming – but at double the price of the current Individual plan.

A source told 9to5Mac that upon cancelling his $9.99 Spotify subscription he received an email with a list of possible new plans in the works, in a bid to tempt him back. According to 9to5Mac, the new Platinum high fidelity plan would look a little something like this:

Spotify higher quality audio Platinum plan

For the price of $19.99 a month, an individual user gets everything that is included in a $9.99 Spotify Individual plan, plus:

  • HiFi
  • Studio Sound
  • Audio Insights
  • Headphone Tuner
  • Limited-ad Spotify podcasts
  • Playlist Pro
  • Library Pro

9to5Mac quotes a user named Drew as saying: “I received a survey from Spotify today after cancelling Spotify Premium for Apple Music after 10 years with Spotify. The survey shared with me details of Spotify’s upcoming subscription tiers available and asked if I would switch back “in the next 30 days” for one of these features.”

Would anyone pay $20 for Spotify with HiFi?

The problem is, Spotify’s competitors aren’t charging any extra for lossless audio. Just after Spotify’s initial announcement early last year, Apple Music upset the, er, apple cart by offering HiFi for no extra cost, with Amazon Music quickly following suit.

Higher quality audio has become industry standard. Spotify would seem miserly charging double the current price tag unless they offered some seriously sweet perks.

Why haven’t we seen Spotify HiFi yet?

The official announcement of Spotify HiFi was February 2021. Spotify has been tight-lipped about any potential launch, bar a Status Update that promised the platform would “deliver a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium users in the future.”

Platinum sounds like a different beast to simply Spotify Premium with CD-quality audio. It could be that Spotify has been working on the mysterious extra features listed, such as “Audio Insights” and “Headphone Tuner,” intending to charge customers more money and needing the justification to do so.

So. If a Spotify Platinum high-quality tier materialises as rumoured, will you be signing up?
