Spotify are breaking out of their smart speaker restrictions so that free listeners can stream music on their favourite speakers just like Premium users.

I know many people who’ve gone through this tragedy: You return home with a new smart speaker, excitedly awaiting your first chance to say proudly aloud to it exactly what you want to listen to. Then comes the kicker, you have to be a Premium subscriber to listen on a Smart Speaker.

Well, quoth Spotify, nevermore will we be left without on some of the top smart speakers. Owners of Sonos speakers, Amazon Alexa powered devices and Bose’s Smart offerings will now be able to stream Spotify for free in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S..

Free listeners can use Spotify Connect to set up their streaming experience with all of their Sonos speakers. Spotify will work across all of Sonos’ wide range of speakers on offer, including their new portable, battery powered speakers: Sonos Move.

Through Spotify Connect, you can use Spotify on your smartphone or desktop as a remote to get the jams going. To play music using your Smart Speaker through Spotify Connect, first make sure that your Sonos or Bose system is updated to the latest firmware. Then open the Spotify app on your phone, laptop or tablet. Play any song, then select the “devices” icon. Finally, select the device you want to stream from and start listening.
