Spotify brings video to playlists
Spotify’s new Clips tool connects artists with their listeners more intimately and it looks like they’re coming to playlists.
Last year, Spotify launched Clips. These short videos gave artists a way to speak directly to their fans from their artist page. This creates a more intimate connection and a unique way to promote artists’ music.
Music Ally have reported on new screenshots which suggest the feature may be coming to playlists too. In the images, a swipeable carousel at the top of Spotify’s popular playlist ‘Pop Drive’ shows clips from Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone. The chosen clips are specifically for their tracks which feature in the playlist.
The feature is currently only a leaked peek of the feature being tested, so we don’t know if and when it will be launched wider. Spotify did recently announce that they would test new promotional features with a bolstered partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG). Sabrina Carpenter’s label Island Records is a subsidiary of UMG.
Daniel Ek told in the latest earnings call for Spotify: “You are going to see music clips show up in a bigger way where artists are using ways of short-form storytelling on video, to tell a story around their album or tell fans about a new album drop that they should be pre-saving.”
Spotify haven’t commented on the test after Music Ally contacted them.
Artists with their music on Spotify can upload their own 30 second Clips to their artist profile. They will need access to their Spotify for Artists dashboard from which they can upload their videos or create one.
