If you’re a Spotify Premium user, you may now be able to create AI playlists to suit your mood exactly.

Spotify is expanding its AI Playlist feature to over 40 new markets in English. The feature enables listeners to type in an idea or prompt, such as “workout music to make my ex jealous”, and generate a playlist of tracks to fit that mood.

This feature was originally launched in April 2024, and was only available to Premium users in the United Kingdom or Australia. Then, in September 2024, the feature was rolled out further to Premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

According to the announcement at the time, 22 billion new artists are discovered each month on Spotify, showing the importance and value of playlisting for both artists seeking new listeners, and fans looking for fresh music they might love. According to the music streaming giant, “are great sources for discovery, fostering deeper relationships between artists and fans.”

Today, Spotify has announced that Premium users in 40+ new markets can take advantage of AI Playlist. These markets include countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean, while remaining in the English language. With millions of playlists created using the feature, Spotify is enabling more users around the world to turn their creative ideas into playlists.

Here’s how AI Playlist works

  • Go to Your Library in the Spotify app
  • Tap the + button at the top-right corner, then select “AI Playlist”
  • Select a suggested idea or type your own
  • Refine by using additional prompts like “more upbeat”, or delete tracks you don’t want

Spotify has explained that the “most successful” playlists are generated through prompts based on genre, mood or artist. However, this isn’t to say you’re limited to requests like these, and apparently animals, colours, movie characters are all solid options too.

To get started, Spotify suggests trying out:

  • “Afrobeat tracks to heat up the dance floor”
  • “Trending K-Pop hits I need to know”
  • “2000s reggaeton for soaking up the sun”
  • “Songs to hype me up for the football match”
  • “Upbeat Latin songs from my top genre”

What’s next?

Spotify has made it clear that AI Playlist is still in beta. This means that the company is still in the learning phase of the feature, and will continue to develop and iterate with each exchange between user and AI.

“We will continue to refine AI Playlist to best serve our listeners and bring the feature to even more users.”
