AudioKit’s Saga Synth is a new software synth that’s inspired by the classic Mega Drive games console.

The new Saga Synth is the first installment of “the next generation of AudioKit Pro Apps”, and it features samples from five Yamaha YM2616 sound chips that were used in the original Mega Drive and plus the first-edition version of the MEGAfmsynth.

Sega’s Mega Drive often fills many of us with nostalgia. In fact, the original game console was first released in Japan in 1988! The Mega Drive hosted memorable game franchises like Sonic The Hedgehog, Super Mario, Mortal Kombat, and so many more family favorites. Of course, many of these epic franchises have some of the most recognizable soundtracks and soundbites of the late 80s and early 90s.

Saga Synth is available in a standalone format and iOS AUv3, and it includes sounds from Brian Funk’s 16-Bit Ableton Live Pack – for the first time on iOS. Furthermore, Saga Synth offers a free-running step sequencer, exclusive sound sources made especially for the app, and 16-bit synth, drum, and sound effects. That’s a sweet package now available for iOS!

Over 600+ MB of sounds have been compressed to under 150 MB with a total of 300 presets available to you. Additionally, you can record audio and export recordings as WAV files, and use Saga Synth as an iOS plugin in GarageBand, AUM, Cubasis, Beatmaker 3, and more! Finally, Saga Synth has Ableton Link and MIDI compatibility, so you can use it as an iOS MIDI host.

The Sega Synth is available now for $2.99, but this is only an introductory offer. The soft synth will rise in price to $14.99 next month.
