Pinterest joins forces with record labels to add Silk Sonic, Ed Sheeran and more famous artists to Idea Pins, Pinterest’s TikTok feature.

Want Ed Sheeran strumming in the background of your Idea Pin? A deal between online mood board platform Pinterest and music companies Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell Music, BMG and Merlin means that Pinterest users will now be able to add popular music from their catalogues to Idea Pins.

Idea Pins, launched in 2021, are short-form videos on Pinterest – essentially, versions of TikTok videos on Pinterest.

Merlin CEO Jeremy Sirota said: “This partnership has been a truly collaborative process to visualize how Pinterest creators can make music a more integral part of their experience on the platform. We are excited to make independent music part of Pinterest’s exciting feature. Merlin members are excited to see the content that emerges from it.”

The Pinterest platform hopes more music options will equal more users creating short videos, in a bid to cut a slice from the short-form video trend that is now the norm online, sparked by TikTok. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, even as TikTok looks elsewhere for its next move, already moving to longer videos and with an eye on music streaming.

The partnership with Merlin and other music companies adds licensed music to Pinterest’s existing royalty-free music library.  YouTube meanwhile recently announced Creator Music, shaking the sync license industry with announcements of monetisation of licensed music on longform videos, and bringing proper monetisation to TikTok competitor Shorts.
