YouTube’s new two-person tier could offer more flexibility and savings for users who don’t need a full family plan.
YouTube experiments with a duo Premium plan
YouTube has confirmed it is piloting a new Premium subscription tier designed for two people. Currently being tested in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, the plan offers a more affordable way to access Premium features like ad-free viewing and background play without needing to commit to the more expensive family plan.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.”
Alex McQuiston, YouTube spokesperson
This new two-person plan functions similar to Spotify Duo, allowing two people to maintain separate accounts under one discounted subscription. This is ideal for couples, roommates, or any two users in the same household who want to save money while still enjoying Premium features. To be eligible, both users must:
- Be 13 or older
- Have a Google account
- Belong to the same Google family group
A look at the price
The news originates from MoneyControl, who shared screenshots of the pricing in Indian rupees, with the two-person plan falling nicely in between the tiers:
- Individual plan: ₹140.00 per month
- Two-person plan: ₹219.00 per month
- Family plan: ₹299.00 per month
While it is hard to directly compare pricing internationally, this would likely make the two-person plan roughly $16/month in the US.
A broader push from YouTube?
This new subscription tier comes as YouTube continues to expand its subscription offerings to grow revenue beyond advertising. Just a couple of months ago, the company rolled out YouTube Premium Lite– a more affordable plan that gives an ad-free experience on “most” videos. The Lite tier does exclude YouTube Music, ad-free music videos, offline downloads, and background play.
This two-person Premium tier may signal a broader strategy to attract new subscribers with more flexible pricing models. As with any test, there’s no guarantee whether YouTube will launch it globally. For example, YouTube Premium Lite took years before a wider rollout.
For now, the two-person plan is limited, but could become an affordable alternative for a couple wanting YouTube’s Premium perks at a cheaper price.
