Taylor Swift set to become most awarded Artist in MTV VMA history
Taylor Swift is set to make MTV VMA history once again, with the global superstar announced as the first-ever recipient of the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors.
The new award will be presented at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, recognising Swift’s work behind the camera and her contribution to music video direction and visual storytelling.
The honour will also give Swift another major milestone at the VMAs. She currently shares the record for the most VMA wins with Beyoncé, with 30 awards each. The new Artist Director Honors will take Swift to 31 VMA wins, making her the most awarded artist in the ceremony’s history.
A new honour for artists behind the camera
The inaugural Artist Director Honors has been created to recognise artists whose work as directors has helped expand the creative possibilities of music videos.
According to MTV and CBS, the award celebrates a sustained and influential body of directorial work, particularly artists who have developed a distinctive visual style and pushed the boundaries of music video storytelling.
For Swift, directing has increasingly become an important part of her creative process.
She made her solo directorial debut with “The Man” in 2020, winning the VMA for Best Direction. She went on to direct All Too Well: The Short Film, which won three VMAs in 2022, including Video of the Year and Best Direction.
Her directing credits have since expanded to include videos such as “cardigan,” “willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma,” “I Can See You,” “Fortnight,” “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.”
Swift has received seven VMA nominations for Best Direction and won the category four times, making the new honour a recognition of a body of work that extends beyond her achievements as a recording artist.
Swift’s VMA record continues to grow
Swift’s relationship with the VMAs has already produced some of the ceremony’s biggest moments.
In 2024, she collected seven awards, taking her career total to 30 and drawing level with Beyoncé for the all-time record.
Now, just two years later, Swift is set to move ahead of that record thanks to an award that specifically celebrates another side of her artistry.
The milestone comes during another significant VMA year for Swift. She has received nine competitive nominations for the 2026 ceremony, including Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Best Direction.
Her nominations also include recognition for The Fate of Ophelia and Opalite, further highlighting the visual side of her recent work.
A big night for the 2026 VMAs
The 2026 MTV VMAs will take place at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater on Sunday, September 27, with Snoop Dogg hosting the ceremony.
Madonna leads this year’s nominations with 11, while Swift follows with nine. Nirvana will also receive the Video Vanguard Award, adding another major career milestone to an already history-making ceremony.
For Swift, however, the evening will be about more than adding another Moon Person to her collection.
The Artist Director Honors places her work as a filmmaker and visual storyteller at the centre of the ceremony, recognising the increasingly hands-on role she has played in bringing her music to the screen.
And when she accepts the inaugural award, Swift will officially hold the record for the most VMA wins by any artist in the history of the awards.
The 2026 MTV VMAs air live from Los Angeles on September 27, with the ceremony simulcast on MTV and CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the US.
