Music lovers in Uruguay can rejoice as Spotify change their plans to leave the country following clarification from the government.

In November, Spotify announced that they would leave Uruguay. The decision came after a change to music copyright laws in the country. A new bill introduced by the country demands better remuneration for artists, but a lack of clarity left Spotify unsure as to where the money would come from.

Spotify wrote that “any additional payments would make our business untenable”. The Uruguayan government have since clarified their new bill: It is the responsibility of rightsholders to increase the payments to artists.

This means that Spotify will continue to pay out the same amount, roughly 70% of every dollar it generates for music. The rightsholders that they have paid the revenue too are then responsible to pay more directly to the artists behind the music.

Spotify stated: “The Uruguayan government has demonstrated that it recognizes the value Spotify provides to local artists, songwriters, and fans.”
