The new app lets Spotify share external payment links, giving US users access to cheaper subscriptions.

Apple approves Spotify’s new app

Just yesterday, Spotify submitted a new iOS app update which Apple has already approved. With the new app update rolling out now, this makes Spotify one of the first major apps to take advantage of a recent court ruling that forces Apple to allow third-party developers to include links to external payment sites.

Until now, Apple prohibited apps from informing users about alternative ways to pay for subscriptions outside of the App Store, with Apple receiving a 30% service charge on any in-app payments. That changed following the Epic Games v. Apple case, where the Californian judge ordered Apple to change its restrictions on external payments.

What’s new in Spotify’s iOS app?

The newly approved Spotify app offers US users more transparency, flexibility, and choice:

  • Users can now view clear information about subscription pricing and promotional offers.
  • Direct links allow users to manage subscriptions via Spotify’s own website.
  • It’s easier to switch between subscription plans.
  • Payments can be made outside of Apple’s systems, removing Apple’s 30% in-app purchase fees.

Why this change matters

Not only is this change beneficial for app developers, but it also benefits artists, labels, creators and users. Prior to this change, Spotify was unable to show users they could get a cheaper subscription directly on Spotify’s website.

Spotify says the move is a win for “consumers, artists, creators and authors”. With lower transaction fees and fewer platform restrictions, more revenue could potentially flow back into the pockets of creators.

The bottom line is: Spotify’s new app marks a shift in how digital content and services can be monetized. It could just be a step toward fairer practices, and more consumer choice which could benefit those creating the content.
