With a historic €390 million in collections, SGAE hits a new high- boosted by streaming, international growth, and live music.

SGAE breaks revenue records in 2024

Spain’s leading collecting society, SGAE, has announced its highest revenue figures to date, collecting €390 million in 2024. This milestone marks an 11.7% year-on-year increase and the largest global revenue figure in SGAE’s 125-year history.

Out of this total, more than €349 million was distributed to its 120,000 members- a great sign for its authors, songwriters, and music publishers. That’s up from €329 million in 2023, making it the second-highest amount of author rights distributed ever.

What is SGAE?

SGAE (Soceidad General de Autores y Editores) is a non-profit collective rights management organization. It represents creators across music, audiovisual, and performing arts, working to collect royalties and protect intellectual property on behalf of its members.

Streaming, live performances and vinyl drive growth

Digital was the fastest-growing revenue stream for SGAE in 2024, jumping 25% from the previous year. Streaming alone represented more than half of the €60 million collected from the digital sector. Audiovisual content such as film and television brought in 43.2%, while the remainder (1.3%) came from internet radio, downloads, and mobile ringtones.

Even physical formats made a 11.8% revenue increase to €3.8 million, largely driven by vinyl’s continued revival.

Live performances also saw a strong boost, growing 7.4% year-on-year to reach €48.7 million. SGAE attributes much of this growth to the success of tours by major artists like Karol G, Bruce Springsteen, and AC/DC.

International success

SGAE also celebrated a year of record revenues for foreign income, generating €35.3 million from abroad. This marks the second year in a row foreign collections have exceeded €30 million. When it comes to territory, the European market dominates:

  • Europe: 46.6% (mostly from France and Italy)
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: 28.3%
  • USA and Canada: 22.8%
  • Asia-Pacific: 2.3%

What this means

SGAE’s strong performance is just the latest collection society to set record figures, highlighting a broader industry trend thanks to streaming and international market growth.

For songwriters and music publishers, this news is encouraging. Rising revenues from streaming, live concerts, and even vinyl signal a healthy ecosystem where artists can benefit from multiple sources of income.
