Despacito hit’s 1 billion streams on Spotify, world-first for Spanish music
Despacito has broken records by becoming the first Spanish language song to pass 1 billion total streams on Spotify.
As if Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit song Despacito couldn’t get any bigger, it just became the first ever Spanish language song to pass 1 billion streams on Spotify. Despacito only just celebrated it’s year anniversary last month following an amazing 2017 in which it became the most viewed video ever on YouTube with over 4 billion views.
It says a lot about the power of streaming as well as the universality of music. The music industry has become heavily English-language dominated for the most notorious artists in the world but Despacito proves that language doesn’t matter when it comes to music. It also shows how streaming services are capable of pushing music regardless of origins or where you’re listening.
It seems that Despacito is unstoppable even over a year later. What will the next big achievement be for the hit, Spanish-language track? We will have to wait and see, there’s still plenty of streaming services it hasn’t got a billion streams on…
