Apple has announced their new M2 chipset with new MacBook Pro and Air models.

Apple state that the new M2 chipset provides improved performance against the M1 chipset. So, is it fair to say the new M2 MacBooks will be bigger music production workhorses than previous models?

The M2 MacBook Air offers an 18% performance increase compared to the M1 chip in addition to the 24 GB of unified memory provided by the M2 chipset. As a result, the M2 MacBook Air is more capable than previous iterations to complete both simpler and heavy processing tasks.

Furthermore, the MagSafe charging is back as a standard. But now fast charge is available with an optional 67W USB-C power adapter. The M2 Air has up to 18 hours of battery life. Weighing in at just 1.24 kg and 1.13cm thin.

And a mini-jack output is also back too. In somewhat of a plot twist, this headphone jack supports high-impedance headphones too! The Air has a 13″ liquid retina display and comes in four colours: Midnight, Starlight, Space Grey, and Silver.

The 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro brings more power but doesn’t have a design that’s too bulky. It has a 10-core GPU, features a stylish touch bar and charges via USB-C. You’ll find you get a slightly longer battery life than the M2 air too.

The MacBook Pro with M2 chip provides 20 hours of battery life, and it has a 13.3-inch retina display.

The MBP Magic Keyboard “delivers a comfortable, quiet and responsive typing experience.” The featured Touch Bar empowers you as it hosts the commands you need most “right where you need them”. Finally, Touch ID allows you to access your computer faster with a secure login and make purchases faster too.

Two Thunderbolt ports allow for fast data transfer as you move samples around, faster charging in addition to video output for additional monitors too. Like the M2 Air, the MBP also has a 3.5mm headphone jack that supports high-impedance headphones.

The new M2 MacBook Air will be available in July from Apple next month – starting at $1199. Meanwhile, the M2 MacBook Pro is starting at $1299.
