AirPods and AirPods Pro get better mic quality and camera remote features
At the latest WWDC keynote, Apple announced new free features coming to AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2.
Apple just wrapped up their Worldwide Developers Conference presentation. Alongside updates to their software, including visual overhauls and new features on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26, Apple also demoed firmware updates coming to AirPods.
Apple has announced “studio-quality vocals” are coming to the AirPods. Building on the ‘Voice Isolation’ feature already available, this latest update should improve tonal balance and timbre for clearer calls, enhanced voice quality and natural voice texture.
The above updates are coming to AirPods when connected to iPhone, iPad, or Mac, on the Camera app, Voice Memos, iPhone calls, FaceTime, dictation in Messages, CallKit-enabled apps, video conferencing apps like Webex and other compatible third-party camera apps.
Next up is the ability to use the stem’s touch controls as a camera remote. You can now press and hold the stem to take a photo or record a video from a distance. Press-and-hold again to stop the recording. This feature works on iPhone and iPad through the Camera app and compatible third-party camera apps.
These features are available thanks to the H2 chip, beamforming microphones and computational audio available on newer AirPods, including the AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and AirPods Pro 2. The firmware update is available through iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. The betas are available to developers today. The public beta will be available next month. The public launch will be available to everyone in the fall for free.
