Spotify doubles down on personalization, now letting users exclude tracks from their Taste Profile.

Spotify’s personalisation gets even sharper

Spotify is once again fine-tuning the listening experience for its users. The platform now lets users exclude specific tracks from their Taste Profile, giving even more control over recommendations.

According to Spotify, 81% of users say personalization is their favorite part of the app. So, it only makes sense that the platform is giving people more of what they love, and less of music they don’t.

Why it matters

Until now, Spotify allowed users to exclude entire playlists from shaping their Taste Profile. If you don’t know, your Taste Profile essentially helps shape Spotify’s recommendations for you- whether that’s your Discovery Weekly playlist, Spotify Wrapped, or even what pops up on your Home Page.

This previously left the possibility that one or two tracks could keep showing up that you didn’t really vibe with. Now, you can tell Spotify directly what to exclude, track by track.

As TechCrunch notes, this is especially handy in situations where listening habits don’t truly reflect your taste. For example, kids frequently queuing songs on a parent’s account, or a designated driver being subjected to their friends’ song requests. You wouldn’t want that to mess up your Wrapped at the end of the year.

How it works

Excluding a track (or playlist) from your Taste Profile is easy, here’s how:

  • Click on the track (or playlist) you want to exclude.
  • Tap the three dots in the top-right corner.
  • Select “Exclude from your Taste Profile”.

If you’ve changed your mind, it’s easy to add a song (or playlist) back too. Just follow the same steps and hit “Include in your Taste Profile”.

A bigger personalization push

Spotify has been on a roll with personalization tools this year. Just last month, it rolled out Smart Filters, making it easier to sort music for any occasion. This new ‘exclude’ option builds on that momentum.

For the music industry, this signals another reminder that personalization lies at the heart of Spotify. This is just the latest tool to improve the user listening experience on the platform.
