Dolby have announced a partnership with Audi that will deliver their first Dolby Atmos enabled cars, for “immersive, unforgettable sound”.
Audi will be launching their first cars with Dolby Atmos in July. Their partnerships with Dolby Laboratories will see the immersive, spatial sound of their Atmos technology introduced to certain Audi cars.
Dolby write: “From crystal-clear vocals to surround-like instrumentals, Dolby Atmos brings listeners closer to the music — just as the artist intended.” Atmos will be integrated into the Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D Sound System, which has been specially adapted for the technology in the four currently announced cars:
- Audi Q7
- Audi Q8
- Audi A8
- Audi e-tron GT
Audi drivers will be able to access Dolby Atmos-primed audio from Amazon Music, Audible, and TIDAL, as well as other apps integrated into the car. Tracks can be selected for playback by the driver and dront passenger.
Dolby Atmos is a technology that promises immersive sound, using object-based audio. It enhances on regular surround sound with vertical channels that provide height as well as a radial position. This provides an immersive sound that can really feel like a soundscape is all around the listener.
This simulated 3D space for the music to exist within allows sound designers and music producers to place sounds like objects within the space. For the listener, it will then sound like specific elements of the sound are coming from a particular direction.
Dolby Atmos surround sound systems have been introduced into a range of cars, including those by Mercedes, Cadillac, Lucid, and Lotus. Audi’s first cars to feature Dolby Atmos technology will be delivered in July. The partnership will be available in all Audi Connect territories, which includes the U.S., Canada, and most of Europe.
