Apple’s dedicated classical music streaming service expands to the web, bringing its vast catalog to desktop users.

Apple Music Classical expands

Launched nearly two years ago in March 2023, Apple Music Classical is a standalone app designed to cater to classical music lovers.  Built on the foundation of Primephonic, a classical streaming service Apple acquired in 2021, Apple Music Classical offers a vast catalog of over 5 million tracks, expertly curated playlists, and exclusive albums. The platform is available to Apple Music subscribers at no additional cost.

Now, users can enjoy Apple Musical Classical on the web without needing to install an app. To mark the occasion, Apple has unveiled an exclusive recording of Julius Eastman’s Symphony No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 from conductor Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra, available for the next six weeks.

“Apple Music Classical continues to innovate and expand on its mission to bring great musicians and their recordings to music lovers around the world all in one app. Now that the app is available on the web, Apple Music Classical’s catalog of over 5 million tracks and 50 million datapoints are now available for those who primarily use their desktops to listen to music.”

A gradual rollout across devices

Apple Music Classical has seen a slow but steady rollout across various platforms. It initially took Apple more than a year and a half to launch Apple Music Classical following its acquisition of Primephonic, before it slowly began releasing across devices.

Apple Music Classical is now available as an app on the iPhone, iPad, Android, and most recently received CarPlay support in November 2024. However, it still lacks a native app for Mac, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro.

While Mac users can now access Apple Music Classical through their web browsers, there is still no dedicated app for macOS. Similarly, Apple Vision Pro currently utilises the iPad version of the app. This is particularly confusing for some users given that all of these devices host their own Apple Music app.
