Google Gemini gets Spotify integration, but functionality is limited
Google’s generative AI assistant, Gemini partners with Spotify as one of the first third-party extensions.
In May, Google integrated YouTube Music within Gemini. Then a month later, code hinted that Google were looking to expand Gemini’s music streaming capabilities with Spotify integration. With Gemini rolling out WhatsApp integration last month, Spotify is the second third-party service supported by Google’s AI.
Based on Google’s support article, the features seem very limited at the moment, with finding and playing music the core functionality at the moment. Currently, Gemini cannot create playlists or radio stations.
Spotify integration on Gemini is rolling out in English on compatible Android devices. No word on when or if this extension will come to other languages, the web app, iOS or inside Google Messages. To enable, ensure Gemini Apps Activity is turned on. This holds your AI queries for up to 72 hours.
If you’ve already linked YouTube Music to Gemini, you will need to specify which service you want it to use in your prompts. The first time you use Spotify, you’ll need to authorize the two services to be connected. Once you’ve connected Spotify, Gemini will default to the last used service.
