YouTube Content ID claims shot up in 2023, a great sign for artists and their copyrights with over $9 billion out to rightsholders.
YouTube Content ID is an extensive library of audio that ensures any use of music within videos is correctly credited and more importantly – the ad revenue goes to the artists. So it’s fantastic news that Content ID saw impressive growth in 2023.
Content ID claims were up 25% year-on-year in 2023. YouTube paid out more than $70 billion dollars to creators and artists last year, a huge $9 billion of that going to rightsholders through Content ID. YouTube recently announced a milestone of more than 100 million Premium and Music subscribers, providing a substantial boost to their revenues.
The fantastic thing about Content ID is that it allows creators to use music in their content without any complicated licensing processes. Those artists are then empowered to make a decision whether they want their music to be allowed for use in content, gaining credit, visibility, and revenues automatically if they opt-in.
Nearly 1 billion claims were made in the first half of 2023, with rightsholders choosing to monetize more than 90% of all Content ID claims on YouTube. With rightsholders choosing to monetise rather than block content, video creators are being empowered with quality soundtracking options whilst music creators are able to expand their audience and earn more revenues passively.
At RouteNote, we’ve been helping artists to protect their rights and boost their revenue streams with Content ID for years. Artists can use our platform to upload their music to Content ID for free. We can then automatically claim the revenues on any video that uses their music, ensuring the artist and track are credited in the description and that ad revenues generated go to the artist through us.
