Music streaming giant, Spotify, is currently testing token-gated playlists that allow NFT holders to access curated music from their communities.

NFT band and brand, KINGSHIP, announced in a series of tweets that Spotify token-gated playlists are being tested. This move towards web3 by a major music streaming platform could be another significant step towards the mass adoption of NFTs in the mainstream.

NFT communities are no strangers to unlocking perks and exclusive content. That’s a huge part of what all the fuss is about! Now, Spotify is getting in on the action by piloting playlists that can only be unlocked by NFTs.

At the moment, the service is only available to a few select NFT projects. These include: Fluf, Moonbirds, KINGSHIP, and Overlord. Access is currently limited to NFT holders in the US, UK, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand.

One of the first announcements was made by Univerval Music Group’s own metaverse group, KINGSHIP. The band are among the first to release an exclusive playlist that can only be accessed by KINGSHIP NFT holders. Popular names such as Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Queen, and Led Zeppelin will appear on the playlist.

Also sharing the big news was web3 gaming and media universe, Overlord. Details were outlined in a tweet, explaining that holders of the project’s Creepz NFTs can connect their Web3 wallets on Spotify and access its community-curated “Invasion” playlist.

If you’re a fan of keeping things fresh, then these curated playlists will be perfect. During the three-month testing period, the playlists are set to be continuously updated.

As of yet, there are few further details available around the new Spotify token-gated playlists. Speaking to TechCrunch, a spokesperson for Spotify stated: “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as important learnings. We have no further news to share on future plans at this time.”

All fairly mysterious, but with music NFTs gaining traction in the mainstream, it’s not a huge shock that Spotify has decided to wade in. Excited by this development, KINGSHIP said:

We’re all about unlocking real value for our community and pushing the boundaries of music and blockchain, and having our holders be at the forefront of this space.
