Spotify Premium prices increase in Canada again
Spotify is raising the prices of its Premium plans in Canada, following a price hike less than two years ago.
Spotify users in Canada are facing another increase in Premium subscription costs, with some plans going up by as much as CAD $3 per month. This latest change sees Spotify becoming the more expensive streaming option in the country.
According to Music Business Worldwide, three of Spotify’s four Canadian Premium plans are affected. Referecing an email cited by Billboard, MBW states that the Individual plan now costs CAD $13.99 per month, up from CAD $12.69. Duo has increased from CAD $17.89 to CAD $19.99, while Family now sits at CAD $23.99, rising from CAD $20.99. The Student plan remains unchanged at CAD $6.39 per month.
The latest increase also puts Spotify ahead of competing services on price in Canada. Spotify’s new $13.99 Individual plan is now noticeably more expensive than Apple Music at $10.99 per month and Amazon Music Unlimited, which costs $11.54 for Prime members.
While Spotify has not explained the exact reason behind the change, the company says the extra cost will support further investment in its paid service. In an email to subscribers, Spotify said, “This change means we can invest more in Premium. We are always working to improve Premium and deliver the best possible experience for you.”
The Canadian increase forms part of a much wider pricing strategy. Since 2023, Spotify has introduced subscription increases across more than 150 markets worldwide, including the US, UK, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. Earlier this year, the platform raised its US Individual Premium price to USD $12.99 per month.
Spotify executives have indicated that these increases are likely to remain part of the company’s long-term approach. MBW notes that Co-CEO Alex Norström previously described price adjustments as “part of our toolbox”, adding that Spotify would raise prices “when it makes sense”. He also claimed that higher prices had not slowed Premium growth, with users continuing to subscribe at strong rates.
Spotify’s latest Canadian price rise also comes against the backdrop of ongoing debates around the country’s streaming regulations. The company’s previous increase in 2024 coincided with discussions around Canada’s Online Streaming Act and a proposed levy on foreign streaming services.
While Spotify has not connected this latest change to the dispute, the company previously warned that added costs could impact pricing. During consultations in 2023, Spotify said, “Additional costs could require us to cut expenses… or force us to raise prices for Canadian consumers.”
The increase reflects a broader trend across streaming. Spotify has introduced subscription hikes in markets around the world in recent years, suggesting higher Premium prices may be becoming the norm rather than the exception.
