Sony has expanded its ULT POWER SOUND range with three new large-format party speakers designed to bring powerful bass, high-volume sound and plenty of flexibility to parties, DJ setups and karaoke sessions.

The new ULT TOWER MAX, ULT TOWER 7 and ULT TOWER 5 sit at the top of Sony’s ULT range, combining large circular woofers with high-capacity cabinets, ULT DUCT technology and a selection of sound modes.

They also introduce more practical connections for music setups, including XLR, RCA and USB-C, alongside Bluetooth connectivity and new options for linking multiple speakers.

Built around bigger bass

Bass is the main focus of the new ULT TOWER range. Designed with input from several hip-hop sound creators, the speakers are tuned towards deeper low frequencies, greater impact and clearer vocals.

Sony has developed a new circular woofer design for the three speakers, working alongside the larger cabinet volumes and ULT DUCT system to produce deeper low frequencies and higher sound pressure.

The range is split across three sizes. The flagship ULT TOWER MAX uses three woofers, with two facing forwards and another positioned at the rear. Sony rates it for up to 2,150W of output. The ULT TOWER 7 steps down to a single 280mm woofer, two mid-range drivers and four tweeters, with up to 420W of output. The smaller ULT TOWER 5 uses a 230mm woofer, two mid-range drivers and two tweeters, with up to 300W of output.

Four sound modes, including a new FLAT setting

Sony has also expanded the ULT sound controls.

The ULT button gives users access to ULT1 and ULT2, with the former enhancing deep bass and the latter pushing the bass and sound pressure even further. There are also FLAT and LIVE modes.

FLAT is particularly interesting for anyone using the speakers for more than a party playlist. Rather than adding the exaggerated bass associated with ULT modes, it is designed to reproduce music closer to its original sound.

LIVE, meanwhile, is intended to create a more spacious performance-like presentation while keeping vocals clear.

Users can also fine-tune the sound through the Sony | Sound Connect app, including custom EQ adjustments.

360° sound and automatic optimisation

The ULT TOWER MAX and TOWER 7 also feature 360° Party Sound, designed to spread audio around the room rather than concentrating it in one direction. The ULT TOWER MAX combines its front-facing drivers with the rear woofer and additional rear-facing tweeters to help distribute sound around the speaker.

Sony has also introduced enhanced Sound Field Optimization, which analyses the speaker’s placement and surrounding noise before adjusting the sound balance across the frequency range.

That could be useful when moving a speaker between different environments. A setup in a living room, garden or event space can behave quite differently acoustically, so automatic adjustment means there is less need to manually compensate every time the speaker is moved.

All three of the new ULT TOWER speakers can also be placed vertically or horizontally, giving them the flexibility to fit in different spaces. 

Made for DJs, parties and karaoke

The new ULT TOWER speakers aren’t limited to wireless playback. All three models offer XLR, RCA and USB-C connections, giving DJs, musicians and performers more ways to connect external equipment.

Karaoke is another major part of the feature set, with support for Sony’s optional ULT microphone.

The speakers can also be linked together using Sony’s new Party Chain feature, which uses Auracast to synchronise compatible speakers and their lighting.

Lighting that changes with the music

As you’d expect from a modern party speaker, lighting plays a major role in the new ULT TOWER design. Sony has introduced three lighting modes: BEAT, which synchronises lighting with the rhythm, WAVE, which provides more ambient effects, and MELLOW, which uses slower patterns.

The speakers can also synchronise their lighting when used with Party Chain. It is mostly about creating atmosphere rather than improving audio performance, but it gives DJs and party hosts another way to change the feel of a space without adding separate lighting equipment.

Battery life and portability

Despite their size, Sony has put considerable attention into making the ULT TOWER models easier to move.

All three feature redesigned carry handles, while the TOWER MAX and TOWER 7 have wider wheels for easier movement across different surfaces.

The TOWER 7 and TOWER 5 are also rated IPX4 when used vertically, giving them some protection against splashing when they’re being used outdoors.

Battery life varies between the models. Sony rates the TOWER 7 for up to 30 hours and the TOWER 5 for up to 20 hours of playback.

The TOWER MAX is the exception: its much larger design and higher output mean it relies on mains power rather than a built-in battery.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind. Despite sharing the same overall design, the three models are aimed at different requirements when it comes to power, portability and space.
