Instagram is making it clearer when an account features an AI-generated person, with unlabeled profiles potentially facing reduced reach.

Instagram is introducing a new AI-generated profile label to make it clearer when people are interacting with a profile built around an AI-generated person rather than a human creator.

The Meta-owned platform says the change comes in response to feedback from users who want to know when an account appears human but is actually based on an AI-generated identity.

The update also brings a notable change for creators: Instagram says AI-generated profiles that aren’t appropriately labelled may have their reach limited.

What is Instagram’s AI-generated profile label?

Instagram’s new AI-generated profile label is here to replace the previous AI creator label, in the hopes that it will help clarify exactly what was being labelled.

The new wording is intended to refer specifically to profiles that feature an AI-generated person, rather than accounts belonging to human creators who simply use AI tools during their creative process.

The label can appear on the profile itself and alongside its content, including when individual posts don’t already carry an AI-generated or AI-edited label.

Creators who previously used the AI creator label will be given the opportunity to review the new AI-generated profile label. From there, they can confirm that it still applies or remove it if their profile no longer fits the criteria.

Importantly, Instagram says creators don’t need to use the AI-generated profile label simply because they use AI tools as part of making their content.

Unlabelled AI profiles could lose reach

The biggest change for creators is the potential impact on recommendations.

Instagram says it will detect AI-generated profiles that haven’t been appropriately labelled and notify the account owner. Those accounts may become ineligible to appear in recommendations across Reels, Explore and suggested content, ultimately limiting their ability to reach people who don’t already follow them.

Creators who add the label won’t see their reach reduced as a result of doing so, even if it’s added after their account has been flagged.

If Instagram incorrectly identifies an account as an unlabelled AI-generated profile, the creator can check their Account Status and appeal the decision.

What does this mean for independent artists?

Instagram is an important part of how independent artists introduce themselves, promote releases and build relationships with listeners. As AI-generated identities become more common, platforms are having to make the line between human and synthetic creators clearer.

For artists, the immediate takeaway is simple: be clear about what you’re presenting.

If your account is built around an AI-generated person, make sure the appropriate profile label is in place. If not, you could risk losing eligibility to appear in recommendations, which will make a big difference to how new audiences discover your music content.

More broadly, Instagram’s update shows how transparency is becoming part of the infrastructure around AI-generated content. As synthetic artists, influencers and personalities become more visible online, platforms are increasingly asking creators to make it clear who is behind an account.

For independent artists and labels, that makes having a clear and authentic presence across social platforms increasingly important. Your Instagram profile is one part of that picture, alongside your music, artist branding and the way you release and distribute your work.
