SoundStage lets you live out your craziest studio dreams without any of the music equipment, just a virtual reality headset and controller.

Virtual reality is surpassing expectations every day. What was being designed mainly for gaming has led to applications that turn the world around you into a painting canvas, interactive VR videos, and now SoundStage – a virtual reality app that allows you to create a fully 3D music studio in your own sandbox with synths, sequencers, beats, drum kits, and even more.

Although the concept isn’t complicated it’s one that is best seen in action to fully understand the extent of. Visually it’s very simple but sound-wise it has loads of potential. The interface allows you to chain instruments and devices together using virtual cables using the Vive VR controllers.

Each instrument or device is interactive in some way. Of course it’s not like playing an instrument in real life but it’s cool enough that you won’t even mind you’re having to drum in half-time. Plus by chaining instruments up to various different elements you can experiment with a massive range of sounds.

SoundStage isn’t just for experts at sound design either, though you may need a small understanding of linking electronic instruments. Soundstage say: “Whether you’re a professional DJ creating a new sound, or a hobbyist who wants to rock out on virtual drums, SoundStage gives you a diverse toolset to express yourself.”
