Instagram has officially launched profile grid reordering, giving creators, musicians, and brands the ability to rearrange posts without deleting or reposting content.

After years of requests from creators, Instagram is finally rolling out the ability for users to reorganise their profile grid.

As The Verge reports, the feature began rolling out widely on the 8th of June across Android and iPhone devices, allowing users to simply long-press and drag posts into a new position on their profile. Previously, users had very little control over the order of posts on their profile, beyond pinning a handful of posts to the top of their grid.

The update means creators can now showcase content in any order they choose, regardless of when it was originally published.

This rollout follows Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s announcement in 2025 that the company was bringing back plans for grid customisation. At the time, Instagram also revealed it was exploring new tools designed to give users more flexibility and reduce the pressure around posting.

Get more control over your artist brand

For musicians, producers, labels, and content creators, Instagram profiles often act as a digital storefront.

Whether you’re promoting a new release, highlighting your catalogue, showcasing tour dates, or building a cohesive visual identity, the ability to rearrange posts offers significantly more creative control.

Previously, artists wanting a carefully curated grid often had to plan content weeks in advance or rely on deleting and reposting older content. Now, older releases, milestone moments, press coverage, or viral clips can be moved into more prominent positions without sacrificing engagement history.

The feature could also prove useful for artists creating themed grids, visual campaigns, album rollouts, or seasonal promotional content.

Why is Instagram making this change?

The move reflects a broader shift across social media platforms towards creator-focused customisation.

As The Verge notes, Mosseri originally acknowledged frustration from users after Instagram moved away from its traditional square profile thumbnails in favour of taller vertical previews. The new reordering tool gives users greater control over how their profiles appear, regardless of platform design changes.

It’s also another example of Instagram responding to long-standing creator feedback rather than focusing solely on algorithm-driven discovery features.

The bigger picture for independent artists

While profile aesthetics might seem like a small update, first impressions matter.

Potential fans, industry contacts, playlist curators, journalists, and collaborators often visit an artist’s Instagram profile before clicking through to streaming platforms. A more intentional profile layout can help communicate your brand, latest releases, and key achievements more effectively.

Combined with smart release strategies, consistent content, and global music distribution through platforms like RouteNote, artists now have another tool to shape how audiences discover and engage with their music online.

If you’ve been sitting on older content that still represents your brand, now might be the perfect time to give your Instagram profile a refresh.
