Anyone who views a story you share that features a song from Spotify will now be able to actually hear the track.

Sharing your favourite music through Instagram just got easier and smoother, thanks to a small but fairly impactful update. Instagram has added audio previews for Spotify songs shared to Stories, finally letting people actually hear the music without leaving the app.

Until now, sharing a track from Spotify to Instagram Stories would only generate a visual and a link. That meant anyone viewing the story would have to tap the link and be taken to Spotify to be able to listen to the track. When scrolling (doom or otherwise) is so addictive, most users wouldn’t really bother to tap away from the social media platform. With this new feature, the music plays automatically within the Story, offering a quick preview for anyone watching.

This change makes sharing and discovering music on Instagram much more seamless. Rather than acting as just a visual shout-out, a shared song now comes to life, making it easier for others to hear and connect with new tracks, especially ones they might not ever have searched for on their own.

As TechCrunch reports, “when a user posts a song to their Story, viewers will be able to listen to a preview of the song right within Instagram.” That simple shift could have a big impact, particularly for anyone hoping to introduce others to new music more naturally through the platform.

The update also follows a recent feature rollout that allowed users to stream music clips from Spotify directly in Instagram Notes. Together, these changes show that Instagram is building more ways to incorporate music into everyday content – something that could help it compete more directly with TikTok, which has long dominated music-based sharing.

This update applies to users across the globe and took effect yesterday (30th June).
