Deezer adds 500,000 subscribers in a year
Deezer subscribers sees some immense growth as their new royalty payout models look to give back more to artists and rightsholders.
Deezer have had a powerful year seeing major growth in revenue and subscribers. Their Q3 2023 results show that they’ve added 500,000 subscribers since Q3 2022.
Despite revealing a loss of 200,000 subscribers around the world, they made that up in their home-country France. Their huge gains were made through their partnerships which saw growth of 11.8%. A recent partnership with Mercado Libre’s new service Meli+ saw a massive boost in Brazil and Mexico. Along with other partnerships they added half a million subscribers by teaming up with other companies.
Deezer’s total revenue grew 4.8% year on year to €120.7 million. This was also largely boosted by partnerships which saw 11.9% of growth compared to Q3 2022. The majority of their revenue still comes from direct listeners though, accounting for €82.5 million of the total.
The French streaming service has loyalty at home, with revenues from France far exceeding those around the rest of the world. Deezer earned €71.7 million in France, whilst earning €49 million for all other territories in which they’re available. However, their revenue from the rest of the world saw 3x the growth.
This report comes in the wake of big changeups as to to how Deezer pays out to certain artists. Earlier in October, Deezer launched an artist centric payment model for UMG artists. The new scheme aims to boost artists with natural engagement and increase the royalties they receive.
Deezer’s impressive year may be followed by much more. Their recent bold changes to royalty payouts are garnering attention from artists and labels, whilst great growth in their markets beyond France shows solid potential for an even bigger year.
I’m very proud of what we have achieved in Q3 2023. We are back to meaningful subscriber growth and secured top line acceleration starting in Q4 thanks to the implementation of a new wave of price increases, as well as the ongoing growth of new partnerships. Additionally, we once again lead an important change in music streaming with the introduction of the new Artist Centric model which will help create a healthier ecosystem and better reward artists and music, while enhancing fan experience. And finally, we have successfully renewed the majority of our contracts with key content providers, with improved terms ahead of time.
