After launching in 2020, the French social media app gained real popularity earlier this year. What some are calling the “anti-social media” app, BeReal sends a notification to all users, at the same time, giving everyone two minutes to capture a moment in their day, using the front and back smartphone cameras. No filters. No edits. No likes. No followers. No influencers. No ads. Just real people, living real lives.

As the likes of Facebook and Instagram continue to gain negative press over scandals, mental health concerns and controversial changing features, could BeReal BeTheAnswer? While it’s still early days for the stripped-down social media app, July saw over 20 million downloads, and August reported over 10 million daily active users. BeReal is the number one downloaded app in several countries around the world, including the US, Germany and Australia. It’s already caught the attention of Instagram, with their new “Dual Camera” feature and test of “IG Candid Challenges” last month.
