A next-gen Alexa could be on the horizon this month, with an AI revamp to enhance the voice assistant experience.

Amazon is gearing up to unveil an upgraded Alexa, integrating cutting-edge AI technology to create a more interactive and intuitive voice assistant. The company has sent invitations to a “new-product” event in New York on February 26, where all signs point to a major Alexa overhaul.

A clever teaser campaign, where five different invitation designs spell out “Alexa” when combined, has all but confirmed that Amazon will introduce an AI-enhanced version of its popular voice assistant.

Smarter features, bigger possibilities

This upgrade marks the most significant leap for Alexa since its launch over a decade ago. Used for little more than setting timers and checking the weather, Alexa is now set to become a far more capable assistant.

Key expected features

  • Conversational AI: Alexa will engage in fluid, multi-prompt conversations rather than handling one command at a time.
  • Preference awareness: The assistant will remember user preferences, offering smarter, more tailored recommendations for music, restaurants, and more.
  • Completing actions independently: It may act as an “agent” on behalf of users, taking actions without needing direct input.
  • Seamless compatibility: The new Alexa will still work with existing Alexa-enabled devices.

For music fans, this could mean a more personalised listening experience, with Alexa curating playlists based on habits and preferences. For artists and labels, this upgrade could provide fresh opportunities to influence smart speaker algorithms to play their music over competitors.

Rollout & pricing

Amazon is expected to launch the new Alexa in stages, initially offering it for free to select users. However, there’s speculation that a subscription fee of $5 to $10 per month could be introduced later down the line.

With over half a billion Alexa-enabled devices worldwide, this could present a huge opportunity for Amazon. Analysts predict that if just 10% of Alexa’s active user base subscribes, Amazon could generate $600 million annually.

The current version of Alexa, now being referred to as “Classic Alexa”, will remain available for free.

Amazon has set a final deadline for February 14 to determine whether Alexa’s generative AI is ready for public release. If all goes according to plan, users can expect a gradual rollout following the February 26 event.

The road to AI Alexa: Challenges & controversies

Amazon’s AI Alexa has faced delays, largely due to the complexity of integrating AI into its existing capabilities, alongside concerns around the quality and speed of its response.

Amazon has also worked alongside AI startup Anthropic, a company entangled in legal disputes with music publishers. Given Amazon’s $8 billion investment in Anthropic, this partnership is hardly surprising.

What this means for the music industry

The smart speaker and voice assistant market has been relatively stagnant in recent years. However, AI-powered assistants from Amazon, Apple (Apple Intelligence with Siri), and Google (Gemini AI) suggest that innovation is occurring.

For the music industry, this could shake things up a little. As Alexa evolves, artists and labels may look to optimise and influence how their music is discovered and plate through voice commands. Additionally, AI-driven voice experiences could introduce new ways for artists and labels to interact with fans.

Final thoughts

The upcoming AI-powered Alexa could mark a significant turning point for smart devices, much like how the original “Classic Alexa” led to the mainstream adoption of voice assistants.

Whether this leads to a resurgence in voice-driven music discovery or simply a smarter way to manage daily tasks, one thing is clear: AI is set to play a bigger role in our audio experiences than ever before.
