YouTube launched YouTube Shorts to take on TikTok as a source of fun, short vertical videos – but how long can they be?

It’s been just over 3 years since YouTube first launched Shorts in India in 2020. It’s been even less time since YouTube Shorts were released in the US and the rest of the world. But, it feels like so much longer.

YouTube Shorts have gone on to be a huge part of the platform, receiving 50 billion views a day and safely keeping the video platform in competition with TikTok. Both platforms now offer a swipe-able stream of short, vertical videos based on your tastes.

How long can YouTube Shorts be in 2024?

YouTube Shorts can be a minimum of 15 seconds and a maximum of 60 seconds. From October 15th, YouTube Shorts can be a maximum of three minutes in length, following the trend of other short-form video platforms increasing their time limits. Vertical videos of this length will be featured in the Shorts feed on the YouTube app and website.

Whilst videos, including in a vertical format, can be much longer than this on YouTube, they won’t be included in the YouTube Shorts section.

YouTube Shorts love music! Creators can choose from a huge range of songs in YouTube Shorts’ library to soundtrack their videos. You can upload your music to YouTube Shorts and make money when it’s used for free at www.routenote.com.
