Instagram is making it easier to put paid reach behind live performances, listening parties and fan Q&As without setting up a separate advertising campaign.

Instagram is giving artists a simpler way to get more eyes on their livestreams, with a new Boost option built directly into the Live composer.

The feature allows artist teams to promote an Instagram Live across Feed, Stories and Reels, using the livestream itself as the ad creative. The promotion only runs while the artist is live, sending people straight into the broadcast.

How Instagram Live boosting works

As Music Ally reports, teams can tap Boost when setting up a Live, choose a target audience or use Instagram’s suggested audience, and set when the promotion should start and end.

A boost can be launched shortly before the broadcast or scheduled in advance, with Instagram recommending at least two hours’ notice to avoid potential delivery delays.

The Live broadcast itself becomes the ad creative, meaning it can be served across Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels while the artist is on air. As WeRSM states, the promotion only runs for the duration of the livestream, with viewers taken straight into the live broadcast rather than being directed to a separate advert or post.

This isn’t the first time artists have been able to pay to promote a Live. That was already possible through Meta Ads Manager. The difference is that Instagram has now brought the process into the Live workflow, removing some of the extra campaign setup involved.

For smaller artist teams, that could make paid promotion much more practical. Instead of creating a separate advert to promote a livestream, the broadcast itself can be put in front of people who are already using Instagram.

A new way to build an audience for Live

For artists, the feature could be particularly useful around livestreams with a clear reason for fans to tune in.

A release-day performance, album listening party, acoustic session or Q&A can all benefit from reaching beyond an artist’s existing followers. But paying for impressions won’t necessarily make a livestream more engaging, so the event itself still needs to give people a reason to stay.

There’s also a case for using the tool selectively rather than boosting every broadcast. Regular Lives can help build a habit with an existing audience, while paid reach could be saved for bigger moments in a release campaign.

Instagram is making Live more promotional

The update is less about introducing a completely new advertising format and more about making paid discovery part of the livestream itself.

That could be significant for independent artists who manage their own marketing. A Live no longer has to rely entirely on existing followers, organic reach or a separate promotional campaign to attract an audience.

For artists planning their next release, it’s another option to consider alongside Reels, pre-save campaigns and other social content. The key will be knowing which livestreams are worth putting budget behind, and making sure there’s something worth tuning in for when those new viewers arrive.
