Apple Music has outlined how it plans to embrace AI in music responsibly, while doubling down on artist protection, transparency, and anti-fraud measures.

Artificial intelligence continues to shake up the music industry as we know it. From AI-generated tracks to playlist creation tools, the technology is already changing how music is made, discovered, and consumed. Now, Apple Music has shared a clearer picture of where it stands.

The overarching message

In an open letter titled “What We’re Doing to Keep Music Fair” shared by 9to5Mac, Apple Music outlined its approach towards AI music. Put simply, Apple Music’s message is pretty straightforward. The platform believes that AI should support creativity, not replace human artists altogether.

That doesn’t mean that Apple Music is anti-AI. In fact, the platform acknowledged that AI presents exciting opportunities. Just look at the AI-powered tools that Apple Music has already introduced into its experience, from AutoMix to Playlist Playground.

But ultimately, Apple Music appears focused on finding a balance between innovative tools and artist protection, ensuring that things are kept fair for human creators.

Apple Music’s guardrails around AI

With that in mind, Apple Music reiterated its focus on improving transparency around AI and preventing abuse, particularly when it comes to stream manipulation and fraudulent activity.

Back in March, Apple Music became one of the first major streaming services to introduce tagging support for AI-generated content. That means distributors can now supply metadata that identifies whether music contains AI-generated elements, with the intention for all providers to do this eventually. While this information isn’t currently visible to users in the app itself, unlike Deezer’s tagging tool, it does allow Apple Music to monitor AI content behind the scenes.

Alongside this, the platform’s internal detection tools are designed to identify AI-generated audio, fraud, spam, and impersonation attempts. Of course, this is part of Apple Music’s wider crackdown on manipulation across the platform.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Apple Music excluded around two billion fraudulent streams from royalty calculations in 2025, helping to redistribute those royalties for genuine artists. At the same time, the platform also doubled the penalties for fraudulent streaming, despite less than 0.5% of total streams on the platform being fraudulent.

All in all, it’s clear that Apple Music is taking proactive steps to tackle and avoid issues as AI music continues to grow.

Human curation still remains front and centre

Despite all the discussion around AI tools, Apple Music is keen to reinforce that humans still play a major role in the platform. The company says its editorial teams remain central to music discovery and recommendations, continuing to curate playlists and spotlight artists across the service. That human-first approach feels particularly important at a time when many artists remain cautious about the growing influence of AI in music.

The bigger picture

AI’s role in music is only getting bigger, and platforms across the industry are still figuring out exactly where the lines should be drawn.

As streaming services continue refining their AI policies, it’s likely we’ll see even more discussions around tagging systems, royalty distribution, impersonation protection, and platform accountability over the coming months. Meanwhile, as streaming services continue exploring AI-powered tools, many are also trying to reassure artists that human creativity won’t simply become secondary.

In short, Apple Music’s latest comments suggest it wants to sit somewhere in the middle. It recognises the innovative opportunities that can occur thanks to AI, but wants safeguards to protect the genuine human artists at the centre of the music industry.
