AirPods with cameras are coming, here’s what to expect
Apple’s upcoming AI-powered AirPods with cameras are nearing mass-production, offering smarter Siri features without the privacy concerns.
Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods are reportedly nearing launch
For a while now, rumours have suggested that Apple has been experimenting with a new version of AirPods featuring built-in cameras. Cameras in earbuds may sound futuristic, especially considering smart glasses are still not perfect. But according to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple’s new AirPods are entering the final stages of testing ahead of mass production.
How will Apple’s camera AirPods work?
Unlike Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, Apple’s upcoming AirPods aren’t expected to use cameras for taking photos or recording video. Instead, they’re designed “for what will likely be the first wearable device designed for the artificial intelligence era,” as per Mark Gurman.
The cameras will essentially act as Siri’s eyes, feeding visual information into Apple’s growing Apple Intelligence ecosystem. Featured in both AirPods stems, the idea is that the cameras could scan and interpret the world around you, helping Siri provide more context-aware responses in real time. It’s kind of similar to Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature already on the iPhone.
And from a design perspective, the cameras themselves may be subtle enough that the AirPods stems won’t look noticeably different from current models.
How are they helpful to users?
AirPods with cameras could unlock some useful everyday features for users. Imagine walking through a city while Siri uses landmarks and street signs to give more precise directions of when to turn. Or scanning ingredients in your kitchen and asking Siri what meal you could make with them.
When it comes to audio, Forbes points out that Apple could even use environmental awareness to improve features like Active Noise Cancellation depending on where you are and what’s happening around you.
What about privacy concerns?
Naturally, the idea of cameras built into earbuds raises some immediate privacy questions. However, reports suggest Apple is already attempting to tackle that issue head-on. The AirPods are expected to include an LED indicator light that activates whenever the cameras are feeding information to the cloud.
Whether that really alleviates privacy concerns is another question entirely, but it’s not like they actually capture footage unlike Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
When will Apple’s new AirPods with cameras launch?
According to reports, Apple was targeting a release sometime in the first half of 2026. However, due to ongoing delays surrounding Apple’s new-look Siri and broader Apple Intelligence rollout, the launch timeline appears to have shifted.
With Apple’s updated version of Siri expected to arrive in September, it now seems like that the new AirPods could arrive this fall too.
Of course, Apple hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet. Still, if the reports are accurate, Apple’s upcoming AirPods may end up being one of the company’s most exciting wearable upgrades in a while.
